Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
FOR WHO? All doctors / dentists practicing in Nigeria
EXEMPTION: House Officers
COMMENCEMENT: January 2011. It is mandatory for renewal of practicing license from 2012.
NUMBER OF CPD UNITS: At least 20 units/annum, the acquisition of CPD units shall be spread through not less than three different quarters of the year. Maximum number of units permissible for any CPD programme shall be ten (10 units) irrespective of the duration of the course. The CPD units shall be acquired from different areas of CPD activities
METHOD OF ACQUISITION: Participate in an MDCN recognized CPD activity. Download the CPD activity record form from www.mdcnigeria.org. Ensure the form is endorsed for the CPD activity you participate in. The completed CPD activity record form (with a minimum of 20 CPD units )shall be returned to the secretariat along with the application for renewal of license for the succeeding year.
SOURCES OF CPD (ACTIVITIES): Lectures/ Workshops, Grand teaching rounds, any other approved structured activity with adequate academic content. Foreign– acquired CPD units shall only be assessed upon submission of the study curriculum.
SCOPE OF ACTIVITIES: All Medical and Dental specialties. Medical ethics, Health Management and ICT training. Emergency care– BLS, ALS
RECOGNISED CPD PROVIDERS: All accredited Medical Schools, All accredited Teaching Hospitals, All accredited Internship Centres, All accredited Residency training centres, Ministries of Health (including HMBs), Key professional associations (NMA and affiliates), Postgraduate colleges (NPMCN, WACS, WACP), Other approved professional societies.

HOW TO BECOME A CPD PROVIDER
Download the CPD Provider application form from www.mdcn.gov.ng Complete the form and return to the MDCN Secretariat with relevant supporting documents and an application fee of N20,000 (twenty thousand naira only) via bank draft made payable to “Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, Abuja”. Intending Private Providers should note as follows: (i) Only doctor/dentist-driven organizations shall be considered. (ii) Where necessary, a visitation may be carried out Cat the expense of the intending provider) before an approval can be granted.
